History : The Cotton College Computer and IT education center was inaugurated on 30 July 2003 at the first floor of the Students’ Day Home at the College premise. The North East Council, Shillong, had funded the center initially. In 2004 after the appointments given by the government, the Computer Science Department came into existence as “Department of Computer Science & Information Technology”. The department is in very initial stage now. B.Sc. major course in Computer Science was introduced in 2005 only. The department is now having three batches with Computer Science as major subject. The department has also introduced BCA course in the year 2007, and now we have three batches of students. The department is running Computer Science as a subsidiary subject in TDC (Science) as per syllabus of Gauhati University. Apart from this, the department is running Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) Course under Gauhati University. And also running a Certificate Course in Computer Hardware and Networking. From the session 2012-13, the department has introduced Master of Computer Application (MCA) Course

Facilities : The Department of Computer Science & IT has three state of art Computer Laboratories with 100 computers and 4 servers, having round the clock internet connectivity. These laboratories are connected through thin-client facility. Now a day’s thin-client is the most advanced and maintenance free technology. It is eco-friendly as it consumes only 1% of power compared to a normal desktop PC. The department is also having a well equipped digital laboratory with 10 numbers of microprocessor kits and all necessary electronic kits and components covering the syllabus. The department is also having a digital multimedia projector for carrying out various student activities like class seminar, project presentation, lectures by internal faculty members, and resource persons from Industries, Universities and IITs. The department has a Seminar Library which includes total number of 324 books.

Activities : Department of Computer Science & IT is one of the most active departments in the College for conducting various activities. The department regularly conducts the following activities:
(i) Arrange Guest Lectures by various well known resource person from various reputed institutions.
(ii) Publish departmental Magazine “Chip” annually and wall magazine “Bytes” with the collective efforts from the students and teachers of the department.
(iii) Field trips are arranged for BCA students as a part of their syllabus .
(iv) Special remedial classes are arranged by the teachers for the student as and when required.
(v) Career counseling is given to the students on regular basis.
(vi) The department actively take part in the process of campus recruitment done through the Placement Cell of the college.
(vii) Students with excellent performance are especially awarded by the department. Moreover, students having 100% attendance are also awarded special certificates by the Cotton College Computer Science Society (CCCSS).
